Sitting snugly on Italy’s eastern coast, Abruzzo is a rolling region of modest hills and ridged mountains, and its conditions are ripe for vine growing. This favorable environment tends to yield larger amounts of Montepulciano and Trebbiano than any other variety, but growers cultivate grapes specifically for bulk wines and experimentation with new and traditional blends in low yields, such as Pinot Grigio, Merlot and Pecorino grapes, producing exceptional wines.

Where other regions can be bogged down in the mire of certificates and designations, Abruzzo’s productions are categorized under the simple DOC. In the north of the region, Montepulciano is a robust, full-bodied red.
