Apulia is the heel of the Italian boot. It contains 25 DOC zones, and the wines produced from them are generally esteemed for their international value. Though Apulia is a single region, it can, in terms of climate and topography, be divided into two regions by drawing a line between Brindisi and Taranto.

South of the dividing line, the land is flat and hot, its sweltering climate tempered by ocean breezes. Famous for its production of dark, powerful reds, recent efforts have favored rosés and light, fruity white wines. Regardless of the region from which the wines are produced, each of them can stand against Italy’s finest.

To the north of this dividing line, the rolling landscape and temperate climate create strong, dry wines with full bouquets. The farther north the more frequently one encounters red wines, most notably Montepulciano and Sangiovese. Just above this hypothetical line, Primitivo and white wines are favored.
