As the largest region in central Italy, Tuscany is a land of diversity. It boasts large, artful cities such as Florence, Siena, Lucca and Pisa, and offers at the same time an idyllic escape into small, quiet villages and the rolling, golden hills of family-owned vineyards. The wines that are pressed and poured from these vineyards are as broad, varied, and rich as the ground from which their grapes are grown.
The most popular are the reds: Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. This region, however, produces more than thirty Denominazione di origine controllata certified wines, as well as the traditional Denominzaione di origine controllata e garantita certificate. Still others are designated as Indicazione geografica tipica, satiating contemporary, international palettes and further broadening the Tuscan scope.
